'The Storyteller'
A video made by Tanya Cusan-Espinosa of Cusan Theatre commissioned by LUMA creations for their FERIA LATINA online festival during September 2020.

A video that reflects on my past work and the work that I’ve been creating with my mother Cecilia Espinosa de Cusan who lives in Colombia translating her stories from Spanish to English.

The video will involve the reading of some of the stories in both languages.

During this time I’ve also been working in my allotment nurturing and growing seeds, watching how everything is interconnected getting more and more interested in permaculture and seeing this as an opportunity for developing my work and how I might use the permaculture philosophy in relation to my storytelling and theatrical work.

'The Princess of the Rainforest'
A wonderful performance by Cusan Theatre, a lot of thought and passion that comes forth as the story unfolds and one that delights the child in the theatre and the child within the adult to come. The Princess is a fusion between a fairy, a bird and a princess, inspired by the people from the lost tribes of the Amazonian jungle in South America, our princess is made from all things recycled. A colourful and bright array of animals and creatures brought to life as puppets tell the story of the rainforest; what it also does is utilise the idea of recycling, that everything that the child sees is made from something else, lessons that can be learned early and be seen as fun, boundless pleasure that be carried on at home.

To inspire children in the theatre requires even greater story-telling ability than what might be perceived or even enjoyed by adult audiences, to get inside the minds of nature’s greatest critics and quite often biggest supporter when engaged properly, is of the upmost importance.
To make children care about the world around them is significant, to let their unbound imagination flourish in a way that sees them appreciate theatre as part of the solution, that is the greatest of gifts that an actor or entertainer can bestow; and in Cusan Theatre Productions’ The Princess of the Rainforest, that sense of power is handed to the children who attend in such a way that it is more than heartening to witness.
Using stories that are inspired by the Latin American and the creator of the performances own Colombian culture, Cusan Theatre bring these tales to life with colour, style and a strong flavour, a beguiling keenness of exploring the riches and a truth of introducing minds to other ways of thinking, to open the possibility in the young of making understand that a big city is one way in which to live, but on the other side of the world, there are children just like them who are happy, enriched and full of their own tales and dreams, that this large rock of a home is one where we can mix freely.

'The Boy who Found his Smile'

The story of the boy is an enchanting and magical journey, full of memorable moments and spell binding ‘special effects’, a story of hope and friendship that takes us into the most incredible journey of emotions, and into the deepest and most exciting places in our imagination. Inspired by my dad's story...a young boy travels from Prague all the way across the sea to Colombia and there he finds the happiness he thought he had lost forever....The Boy takes us into the most incredible journey of emotions, and into the deepest and most exciting places in our imagination.

'El Niño que Encontro la Felicidad', es una obra inspirada en la historia de papa...un joven viaja desde Praga a través del mar hasta Colombia y allí encuentra la felicidad que pensó que había perdido para siempre ...El niño, nos lleva a través de su historia por un viaje lleno de emociones y a los lugares más profundos y emocionantes de nuestra imaginación.

The head for The Boy was made by Alan Pergusey (cabeza hecha por Alan Pergusey)

‘The Boy Who Found His Smile’ at St Magnus International Festival 2019
An Enchanting, magical show for children…an enchanting, emotional journey, The Boy Who Found his Smile, captivated it’s audience at the Orkney Theatre in Kirkwall last Saturday 22ndJune. Inspired by Latin American culture, this short theatrical performance was entirely without words, instead using music, physical movement and visual cues to convey the events. Colombian puppeteer and performer Tanya Cusan-Espinosa gave an enchanting performance as the young boy, managing to convey emotion entirely through her theatrical actions. Her costume as the boy was simple- a large papier- mache mask/head (made by Alan Pergusey) and striped shirt. The mask played an important role throughout the show. I was a magical show that captured the imagination of all the audience…

' Fairy Tales and Dragons'
Take your pupils on a journey of magic, wonder and enchantment exploring fairy tales and dragons!
Fairy Tales are part of our cultural heritage and have traditionally been passed from parent to child through the means of oral storytelling.   These stories often include different cultures and ways of doing things. They teach children about the world outside their own, giving them a curiosity to learn new things and experience new places.
